Eviction drive in Mirpur resumes after clash

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has resumed eviction drives against illegal encroachments in pavements in the Mirpur-10 area of the capital after containing the clash and fire incidents.

The officials have started the eviction drive again at 2:15pm on Wednesday (30 September) in the area.

Earlier, a tense situation has developed over an eviction drive conducted by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on pavements in the Mirpur-10 area.

Sources said a sudden fire broke out during the eviction drive, triggering agitation among the vendors. The agitated vendors allegedly set fire to three waste-carrying vehicles belonging to the city corporation and vandalized an excavator and a police vehicle at the scene.

Police fired tear gas shells at the agitated vendors, while the vendors responded by throwing pieces of brick at the police.

Upon receiving information, two units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot to bring the fire under control.

The vendors took to the streets in front of Mirpur Ideal School, while police took position at the Mirpur-10 circle.

Dispersing the agitated vendors and the calming the situation, after noon, the officials have resumed at the Hope Market area the eviction drive with strict guarding of police, SRB and administrative officials.

Numbers of police have been deployed the area to avoid any unpleasant situation.

Meanwhile, BNP leaders and workers and supporters of DNCC Administer Shafiqul Islam also found staying with the officials with chanting slogans against illegal encroachments.
