At least four people were killed and 10 others injured after an Islam Paribahan bus lost control, crashed through a road divider, and collided with an Akash Paribahan bus coming from the opposite direction in the Nadda area of the capital.

The deceased were identified as Laizu Begum, 38, wife of Md. Kabir Jomaddar, from Mongla, Bagerhat; Kabir Jomaddar, 47, son of A. Rashid Jomaddar, also from Mongla, Bagerhat; Khushi Begum, 35, daughter of Sultan Foraji, from Mongla, Bagerhat; and Md. Rabiul, 22, son of Mojibor, from Mirzaganj, Patuakhali.

The accident occurred around 6:00am on Wednesday, May 27. The Islam Paribahan bus struck the Akash Paribahan bus, causing severe damage to the latter. The crash led to heavy traffic congestion in the area, causing suffering for Eid holiday travelers heading home.

Additional police were deployed at the scene to restore normal traffic conditions. The driver and helper of the Islam Paribahan bus fled immediately after the accident. The injured were taken to Kurmitola Hospital and nearby medical facilities.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Nesar Uddin of Bhatara Police Station, quoting eyewitnesses, said the Islam Paribahan bus was speeding recklessly in the lane heading toward Kuril. At one point, the driver lost control and drove onto the road divider. Unable to regain control, the bus crossed into the opposite lane, where it collided with the Akash Paribahan bus traveling from Kuril toward Sadarghat.

He said one passenger died on the spot, while three others later died at Kurmitola Hospital. In total, four passengers were killed and at least 10 to 12 others injured. Several of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The SI added that passengers from the Islam Paribahan bus said the vehicle had been driven recklessly since leaving Patuakhali. According to them, both the driver and helper behaved irresponsibly, and the driver had been shouting aggressively throughout the journey.

Eyewitnesses also said both buses were heavily damaged in the collision. The wrecked vehicles were later removed from the road using wreckers, restoring normal traffic flow. The driver and helper of the Islam Paribahan bus remain absconding.
