Dr. Yunus pays tribute to July Uprising Martyrs

Former Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has paid tribute to the martyrs and injured participants of the July Uprising, calling on the nation to preserve the democratic, economic and social progress achieved through their sacrifices.

In a statement issued on Tuesday (August 4) ahead of the observance of July Uprising Day on Wednesday (August 5), Dr. Yunus expressed profound respect for those who lost their lives and gratitude to those who were injured while fighting for the people's rights and aspirations.

He urged citizens to remain united and resolute in protecting the achievements secured through the July Uprising.

"The month of July stands as a testament to the people's aspirations for democracy, justice and human rights," Dr. Yunus said, adding, "In our memory, July was not merely a month—it lasted 36 days."

Reflecting on the historic movement, he said the nation had united with extraordinary strength against injustice, demonstrating the collective power of ordinary citizens in defending their rights.

Dr. Yunus paid his deepest respects to all those who embraced martyrdom during the uprising and expressed special gratitude to the injured, including those who lost their eyesight or were left permanently disabled.

Describing the July Uprising as a movement of the entire nation, he said students from schools, colleges, madrasas and both public and private universities had spontaneously taken to the streets. Their parents and teachers also stood alongside them in support of the movement.

He also acknowledged the role of journalists, saying they continued to report the truth despite serious threats to their lives.

The former Chief Adviser further recognized the contributions of politicians, civil society representatives, writers, artists, singers, cultural activists, rickshaw pullers, and healthcare professionals who provided medical treatment while risking their own lives.

Dr. Yunus also recalled the support of the Bangladeshi diaspora, whose advocacy helped draw international attention to the movement.

"The July Uprising taught us a priceless lesson—that when people from all walks of life unite, they can transform even the strongest structures of oppression," he said.

Concluding his message, Dr. Yunus called on the nation to make a firm commitment to safeguard the political, economic and democratic achievements attained through the sacrifices of the July Uprising.
