Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan’s 42nd martyrdom anniversary observes today

Today, August 6, 2026, marks the 42nd martyrdom anniversary of Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan, a distinguished naval officer, former Chief of Naval Staff, and former Minister for Communications and Agriculture. On this day in 1984, he sacrificed his life in service to humanity. His legacy, built on the values of honesty, integrity, hard work, philanthropy, and selfless sacrifice, continues to inspire generations at home and abroad. The anniversary is being observed with due solemnity through a wide range of commemorative programmes.

The observance will begin with the laying of floral wreaths at his mazaar, followed by Quran Khatam, Quran Khawani, and special prayers. His final resting place is located beside his beloved Naval Headquarters, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the Bangladesh Navy into a modern and capable force. The mosque he helped establish for naval personnel continues to echo with the call to prayer, serving as a lasting reminder of his enduring contributions.

The Bangladesh Navy will pay tribute by placing a floral wreath at his grave in the morning. Food will also be distributed among underprivileged people. Following the Zuhr prayer, special Doa Mahfils will be held at Bangladesh Navy mosques across the country in memory of the late Chief of Naval Staff and former minister. Naval personnel will offer special prayers, seeking eternal peace and forgiveness for his departed soul.

At Mahbub Bhaban, Quran Khatam, Quran Khawani, Doa Mahfil, and special prayers will be organized. Begum Mahbub Ali Khan has requested all relatives, friends, admirers, and well-wishers to pray for the deceased.

Special remembrance programmes will also be held at SUROVI, the charitable organization founded by Begum Mahbub Ali Khan on February 1, 1979, for underprivileged children and adolescents. She has often acknowledged that the organization came into existence through the encouragement and inspiration of her late husband. The philanthropic values of Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan were deeply rooted in the example set by his mother, Zubaida Khatun, whose lifelong dedication to community service inspired future generations.

Quran Khatam, Quran Khawani, Doa Mahfils, and special prayers will also be arranged at several madrasas and orphanages, including Jamia Qurbania Talimia Women's Madrasa and Orphanage in Baoniabad, Jamia Qurbania Arabia Madrasa and Orphanage in Bhashantek Cantonment, and Sanmandi Khan Bari Darul Quran Hafizia Madrasa and Orphanage in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.

Across Dhaka, special prayers will be offered at numerous mosques, including Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Baitul Aman Jame Mosque in Dhanmondi, Taqwa Jame Mosque, Eid-Gah Jame Mosque, Azimpur Dayera Sharif Jame Mosque, Mohakhali DOHS Jame Mosque, Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque at Science Laboratory, Sobahanbag Jame Mosque, Baitul Aqsa Jame Mosque, High Court Mazaar Mosque, Baitul Moalla Jame Mosque in Mirpur, and many other mosques throughout the capital.

In Sylhet, the family will organize Doa Mahfils, remembrance meetings, and Tabarruk distribution at their residence in Birahimpur after the Zuhr prayer. Similar programmes will also be held at the family-owned Jame Mosque and Latifia Hafezia Madrasa in Kolabagan, as well as at Jameya Mujahirus Sunnah Khararia Madrasa in Silam, South Surma. Following the Asr prayer, Khatm-e-Qur'an, Doa Mahfils, and food distribution will take place at the shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal (RA) and Hazrat Shah Paran (RA).

The people of Greater Sylhet will also observe the day with Milad and Doa Mahfils at the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal (RA). In addition, South Surma BNP will organize a Milad, Doa Mahfil, and Shirni distribution at Kadamtali Jame Mosque after Asr prayers. Balaganj Upazila BNP and Fenchuganj BNP will separately arrange Doa Mahfils in their respective areas.

Outside Sylhet, remembrance programmes will also be observed in Bogra, where Doa Mahfils and Quran Khawani will be held at Baitul Rahman Central Jame Mosque and Lathiganj Blind Orphanage. In Jamalpur, special prayers will take place at Shah Kamal (R) Mazaar Mosque in Durmut after Asr prayers.

The anniversary will also be observed internationally. In Saudi Arabia, Tawaf of the Holy Kaaba will be performed, while special prayers and supplications will be offered in both Makkah and Madinah. Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan was blessed with the rare honour of participating in the washing of the Holy Kaaba during his Umrah, and the cloth associated with that sacred occasion has been carefully preserved by his family as a treasured keepsake.

In the United Kingdom, Mahbub Ali Khan Smriti Sangshad will organize Quran Khatam at the Brick Lane Jame Mosque in London, followed by a Doa Mahfil after Zuhr prayers. An evening discussion on his life and achievements will be held at Regent Lake Hall. During his naval career, Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan received advanced training in the UK and earned distinction among Commonwealth officers, receiving recognition from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

In the United States, Doa Mahfils will be organized at Darul Hikmah Islamic Center in Virginia, the Islamic Center in Jackson Heights, New York, and the Bangladeshi Community Mosque in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Malaysia will observe the day with Quran Khatam, special prayers, food distribution among orphans, and remembrance programmes at several mosques and madrasas, including Madrasa Dato Keramat Kuala Lumpur, Madrasa Tahfiz Ampang Jaya, Ampang Tahfiz Al-Mustaqim Rawang, Surau An-Nur Juru Makraj, Madrasa Pertubuhan Rumah Amal Chahaya, Masjid Al Hidayah in Penang, and Madrasah Tahfiz Darul Aqsa. An evening discussion on his life will also be held at Masjid Al Khair Bukit Bintang Bangladesh Mosque in Kuala Lumpur.

Special prayers and munajat have also been arranged at Sahabi Mosque in Guangzhou, China; Pushchen Songuri Mosque in Seoul, South Korea; Angullia Jamia Mosque in Singapore; and Salman Mosque in the Maldives.

To preserve his remarkable legacy, the Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan Memorial Museum has been established, displaying memorabilia from his distinguished military and public service career. Plans have also been announced to establish the Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan Memorial Trust, dedicated to cardiovascular research, scientific innovation, and social welfare. The proposed Institute of Preventive Cardiology and Research, to be established in his birthplace of Sylhet, aims to raise public awareness about heart disease, provide treatment, and offer free medical services to underprivileged patients.

On behalf of the Family and the Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan Memorial Committee, the martyr's spouse Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, daughters Shahina Khan Zaman and Zubaida Rahman sought prayers for his eternal peace to the countrymen.
