HC dismisses writ challenging ban on AL activities

The High Court has dismissed a writ petition challenging the legality of the government notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and all its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations, saying the petition was “not pressed”.

A High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan passed the order on Sunday (13 September) after hearing the writ petition filed in connection with the matter.

Earlier, on September 7, Md Al Amin, a resident of Munshiganj, filed the writ petition. Advocate Yunus Ali represented the petitioner.

The writ petition sought a rule asking why the government notification issued on May 12, 2025 should not be declared to have been issued without lawful authority. It also sought a stay on the operation of the May 12 notification until disposal of the rule.

The Public Security Division of the Home Ministry issued the notification on May 12 last year, banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League and all its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations until the completion of trials against their leaders and activists before the International Crimes Tribunal.

According to the notification, the ban covers publications, any form of publicity through the media, online platforms and social media, processions, meetings, rallies and conferences, among other activities.
