President calls for research, innovations in modern technology sectors

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday (29 September) called for stepped-up research and innovation in Artificial Intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, biotechnology and semiconductors for the public welfare.

The President made the call when a delegation of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), led by its Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Masud, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban, President's Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam told BSS.

He said awareness must be maintained to ensure that AI is not used uncontrollably and indiscriminately.

"Uncontrolled use of AI is reducing people's thinking capacity and creativity. Therefore, it's essential to ensure its use for public welfare and in moderation."

During the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor briefed the President about the university's overall academic activities.

The President said advanced education should be further decentralized instead of being centered only in the capital.

He also stressed the need to involve universities more in research and development (R&D) activities at the national level.

The Vice-Chancellor formally invited the President to attend the upcoming convocation of KUET as the Chancellor.

The President accepted the invitation and assured that he would attend the convocation, said President's Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam.

The President's Military Secretary, Secretary and Press Secretary, as well as professors of the university, were present at the meeting.
