The Cabinet on Monday (2 November) gave approval – both in principle and final – to the draft Special Solar Power Installation Act, 2026, aimed at expediting the expansion of solar power installations across the country.

The approval came at the Cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.

The draft law was placed to turn the Special Solar Power Ordinance, 2026, already promulgated, into an act.

“The draft law was placed before the Cabinet meeting for the approval. The Cabinet cleared it subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division,” Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Ghani said while briefing reporters after the meeting.

He said the Special Solar Power Ordinance, 2026, was promulgated under Article 93(1) of the Constitution to expedite the expansion of special solar power installation activities.

Explaining the rationale for the draft law, Nasimul Ghani said an ordinance promulgated under Article 93(1) of the Constitution must be placed before Parliament at its first meeting following the promulgation, as stipulated in Article 93(2).

Following the Cabinet's approval, the draft law will be placed before Parliament as a bill.

Once passed by Parliament and assented to by the President, it will turn into an act.

The Cabinet Secretary said the proposed law would undergo parliamentary debate, during which changes could be made if necessary.
