Gazi Nazrul, wife on police remand

A court has granted one-day remand to Satkhira-4 constituency MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, in a case filed over alleged provocation of suicide.

The case was filed following the recovery of Gazi Nazrul’s second wife Mariam Khatun’s body from his NAM flat residence in the capital on Sunday (20 September) night.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam granted the remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki explained the necessity of taking the accused on remand.

Meanwhile, defence lawyer Mahbubur Rahman, along with his colleagues, opposed the remand and sought bail for the accused.

Earlier, Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarker of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station submitted an application seeking seven days’ remand for Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda.

Police reached the spot after receiving information and took Gazi Nazrul and his wife into custody.

Later that night, Mariam’s father filed an unnatural death case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, following which police showed Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda as arrested.
