He won the election with 255 votes. Meanwhile, Col. (retd) Oli Ahmed, the candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, received 88 votes.

The result was announced by Election Officer A M M Nasir Uddin after voting in the presidential election, which was held from 2pm to 5pm on Thursday (August 20).

Meanwhile, Dhaka-8 MP Mirza Abbas and Chattogram-3 MP Mostafa Kamal Pasha had earlier informed Acting Speaker Kaisar Kamal in writing that they would not attend the voting due to illness. Independent candidate and Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumin Farhana was also absent from the voting.

The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected president will be held the following day.

Earlier, Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Nurul Islam Moni said, “Preparations have been made for the newly elected president to take the oath at Bangabhaban at 7:30pm on August 21.”

Acting Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Kaisar Kamal will administer the oath to the newly elected president, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

It may be mentioned that the Cabinet Division had sent a file to the Law Ministry seeking a clear opinion on the constitutional provision regarding who should administer the president’s oath.

After reviewing the matter, the ministry said that as the current Speaker is serving as the acting president, the Deputy Speaker is performing the Speaker’s constitutional duties.

According to Article 74(3) of the Constitution, if the office of Speaker becomes vacant or the Speaker performs the functions of the president, the Deputy Speaker shall perform the duties of the Speaker. Accordingly, the Law Ministry opined that the Deputy Speaker is the appropriate authority to administer the oath to the newly elected president.
