Police have arrested a man in Jaintiapur upazila in connection with a case filed over an alleged attempt to traffic two women to India by promising them well-paid jobs.

A team from Jaintiapur Model Police Station arrested Hanif Mia, 35, son of late Sayed Ali of Dibir Haor village, from the Alubagan area of the upazila around 9:50pm on Thursday (29 October), said its Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman Molla.

He said Hanif was already facing five other cases related to human trafficking.

According to the case statement, Sagorika Begum, 39, of Bahirgram in Narail Sadar upazila, came to Sylhet on October 8 to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA). There, she met another woman, Nasrin Begum, and the two decided to visit Jaflong together.

The complaint alleged that they were taken into a microbus on the pretext of travelling to Jaflong. Once inside, they were offered well-paid jobs in India.

Around 11:30pm, they were taken to Shapla Beel in the Dibir Haor area of Nijpat union under Jaintiapur upazila.

According to the case statement, Hanif and several others tried to lure the women with various promises to facilitate their trafficking to India.

Fearing they were about to be trafficked, the two women managed to escape.

Sagorika later filed a case with Jaintiapur Model Police Station over the incident.
