Bangladesh sets 3 conditions on Tarique Rahman's India visit

Bangladesh set three conditions to India to implement before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's possible visit to the country.

Amid speculation over Tarique Rahman’s potential visit to India, Foreign Ministry spokesperson AKM Shahidul Karim said Dhaka has conveyed to New Delhi that a favourable environment must be created before the visit.

Shahidul Karim said, Extradite Sheikh Hasin, handed over Inquilab Mancha's spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi's killers and creating favourable environment between the two countries are seeking to India.

“Dhaka has sent a message to Delhi about creating a favourable atmosphere before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to India,” he said.

Indian media outlets have repeatedly reported that Tarique Rahman is likely to visit India this week at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The issue has also sparked considerable discussion in diplomatic and political circles in both neighbouring countries.

At a media briefing on Sunday (August 16), AKM Shahidul Karim, an additional secretary at the Foreign Ministry, said Bangladesh is waiting for a favourable environment to be created regarding three issues: expediting the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, handing over the killers of Osman Hadi who are currently fugitives in India, and addressing other outstanding bilateral concerns.

The spokesperson, however, did not provide a specific timeframe for the proposed visit.
