Death sentence for Obaidul Quader, 7 others in crime against humanity case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has sentenced death to activities banned Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and seven others of his party leaders in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising in 2024.

The tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, pronounced the verdict on Tuesday (15 September).

Besides Quader, the other individuals sentenced to death are Awami League Joint Secretary General AFM Bahauddin Nasim; former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat; Juba League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Porosh and General Secretary Mainul Hossein Khan Nikhil; and banned Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.

On Monday (14 September), the tribunal fixed Tuesday for delivering its verdict in the case against Quader, Awami League Joint Secretary General AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat, and top leaders of the Juba League and the banned Chhatra League.

The prosecution concluded its arguments on August 17, seeking the death penalty for all the accused as well as confiscation of their assets. The case had remained pending for a verdict since then.
