July Memorial Museum will unmask fascism: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday (5 August) said the July Memorial Museum will unmask the true face of fascism and preserve the history of the July Uprising for future generations.

He made the remarks after inaugurating the July Memorial Museum at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

"The museum will preserve the history of our struggle, sacrifice and courage, while exposing the true face of fascism," the prime minister said.

Describing the museum as a historic initiative, Tarique Rahman said it would ensure that future generations learn about the sacrifices made during the July Uprising.

He stressed that the museum was not established to promote the narrative of any single political party, as the July Uprising was not the achievement of any one party or group.

"The credit belongs to all democratic political parties and, above all, to the people of Bangladesh," he said.

The prime minister paid tribute to those who were martyred during the July Uprising and recalled the widespread human rights abuses committed during what he described as the fascist regime.

"Enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and abductions had become a normal practice during that period," he said.

He added that the atrocities committed over the past one and a half decades could only be compared to those that occurred in the post-independence period.

Tarique Rahman said the present government is working to build the country in line with the aspirations of the July Uprising. He noted that efforts are underway to implement the July Charter, while a parliamentary committee is working to implement the aspirations reflected in the referendum.

He also said Bangladesh would never become a subservient nation.

The prime minister warned against any provocative acts that could pave the way for the return of fascism.
