Heavy rain likely across Bangladesh as active monsoon intensifies

Bangladesh is likely to experience widespread rainfall over the next several days as the monsoon remains highly active across the country, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

In its 120-hour weather outlook, the BMD forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in many parts of the country, with some areas likely to receive heavy to very heavy precipitation.

The Met Office said the monsoon trough extends from Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal in India through the central part of Bangladesh to Assam. An extension of the trough stretches into the northern Bay of Bengal.

The monsoon is currently active over Bangladesh and moderate to strong over the northern Bay of Bengal, creating favourable conditions for widespread rain and thunderstorms.

According to the forecast, from 9:00 am on Thursday to 9:00 am on Friday, most places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are expected to experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall may occur at places across these divisions.

Several areas in Rajshahi, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions are also likely to receive rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds, with isolated places expected to experience moderately heavy to heavy rainfall.

The BMD further said rainfall activity is expected to intensify on Friday (Aug. 7) and Saturday (Aug. 8), with widespread showers and thunderstorms likely across much of the country.

The Meteorological Department has advised people, particularly those living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain alert as prolonged heavy rainfall could trigger waterlogging, localized flooding and other weather-related disruptions.
