There was a time when the mention of a beauty queen in the Indian subcontinent immediately brought one face to mind- Aishwarya Rai .

With her striking blue eyes, graceful presence and timeless beauty, she became a household name across the world. But her journey did not stop with a beauty pageant title. Over the years, she established herself as an actress, fashion icon and one of India's most recognisable faces on the international stage.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan turns 53 today, November 1. Born on November 1, 1973, in Mangaluru, Karnataka, she spent part of her childhood in Mumbai after her family moved there due to her father's job. She developed an early interest in classical dance and trained in Bharatanatyam. Her modelling career began in the early 1990s, eventually leading her to the international spotlight.

In 1994, Aishwarya won the Miss World crown, a moment that changed the course of her life. She soon moved from modelling to films, building a career that would take her from Bollywood to Hollywood and major international film festivals.

Beyond her beauty and fame, however, her journey is filled with fascinating stories, unusual achievements and memorable career choices. Here are some lesser-known facts about the actress on her birthday.

Aishwarya played Shah Rukh Khan's sister and love interest

Aishwarya has shared the screen with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in several films. Interestingly, she has played both his sister and his love interest.

In the 2000 film Josh, Aishwarya portrayed Shirley Dias, the twin sister of Shah Rukh's character. The same year, she appeared as Megha in Mohabbatein, where she played his romantic interest. Two years later, she reunited with Shah Rukh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, playing Parvati, popularly known as Paru.

Her performances in these films showcased different shades of her acting. While Shirley was lively and outspoken, Megha was a more emotional character. Paro, meanwhile, became one of the most memorable roles of her career.

From Jane Austen's novels to Indian cinema

Aishwarya has also been part of film adaptations inspired by the works of celebrated English novelist Jane Austen.

In 2000, she appeared in the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain, an adaptation of Austen's Sense and Sensibility. She played Meenakshi, a character inspired by Marianne Dashwood. The film also featured Tabu.

Later, she starred in Gurinder Chadha's Bride and Prejudice (2004), a modern Indian adaptation of Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Aishwarya played Lalita Bakshi, the Indian counterpart of Elizabeth Bennet.

Both films introduced Austen's familiar themes of love, family and social expectations to audiences through an Indian cultural setting.

A tulip named after Aishwarya in the Netherlands

Aishwarya's popularity has reached far beyond the film industry. One unusual example came in 2005, when a hybrid tulip variety was named after her during her visit to the Netherlands.

The flower, known as the 'Aishwarya' tulip, was reportedly named in recognition of her global popularity and beauty. It can be found at Keukenhof, the famous flower garden in Lisse, the Netherlands.

Having a flower variety named after a film star is certainly an unusual honour, and it reflects the international recognition Aishwarya had already achieved.

A guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show twice

Another milestone in Aishwarya's international journey was her appearance on the popular American talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show.

She first appeared on the programme in 2005, becoming one of the first Indian actresses to feature on the show. During the conversation, she spoke about Indian culture, arranged marriages, public displays of affection and social attitudes towards skin colour.

Aishwarya also introduced Oprah Winfrey to the traditional Indian saree, gifting her a pink one during the programme.

She returned to the show in 2009, this time accompanied by her husband, actor Abhishek Bachchan. Her two appearances remain an interesting part of her international media journey.

A film with Meryl Streep that never happened, and a role opposite Brad Pitt she turned down

Aishwarya also came close to working with some of Hollywood's biggest names.

She was reportedly signed for a film titled Chaos, which was expected to feature legendary actress Meryl Streep. However, despite both actresses agreeing to the project, the film was never made.

She was also offered the role of Jane Smith opposite Brad Pitt in the Hollywood action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Aishwarya eventually turned down the offer. Reports and interviews have suggested that the film's intimate and kissing scenes were among the reasons she was uncomfortable accepting the role.

The film later starred Angelina Jolie alongside Brad Pitt and became a major box-office success.

From Paru to Binodini: Her memorable screen characters

Aishwarya's career began with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar in 1997. That same year, she made her Hindi film debut opposite Bobby Deol in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya.

Her breakthrough in mainstream Hindi cinema came with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), in which she played Nandini. The film brought her widespread recognition and established her as one of Bollywood's leading actresses.

She followed it with Subhash Ghai's Taal, playing Mansi. In Josh, she appeared as Shirley, while Mohabbatein introduced audiences to her character Megha. However, it was her portrayal of Paro in Devdas (2002) that became one of the defining performances of her career.

Another notable performance came in Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali film Chokher Bali (2003), based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel of the same name. Aishwarya played Binodini, a young widow navigating desire, emotional conflict and the restrictions imposed by society.

The character was considerably different from the glamorous roles she was often associated with. Her portrayal brought out Binodini's intelligence, vulnerability and struggle for identity, making the film one of the distinctive projects in her career.

In 2006, she played the title character in Umrao Jaan, portraying a celebrated courtesan. The role had earlier been immortalised by Rekha in the 1981 film of the same name. Aishwarya brought her own interpretation to the character, with her performance, dance and costumes receiving considerable attention.

Her other notable films include Dhoom 2, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar, Guzaarish, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Sarbjit and the Tamil historical epic Ponniyin Selvan.

Her journey beyond Bollywood

Aishwarya has also appeared in several English-language films, expanding her presence beyond Indian cinema.

Her international film credits include Bride and Prejudice, The Mistress of Spices, Provoked, The Last Legion and The Pink Panther 2. These projects introduced her to a wider international audience and strengthened her profile outside Bollywood.

She also became a familiar face at the Cannes Film Festival. Her first appearance at Cannes came in 2002, when Devdas was screened at the festival. The following year, she served as a jury member in the festival's main competition.

Since then, her appearances on the Cannes red carpet have regularly attracted international media attention. Her fashion choices have become almost as widely discussed as her film career.

Around 17,000 fan websites dedicated to her

Aishwarya's popularity was remarkable even in the early days of the internet.

According to reports, around 17,000 fan websites dedicated to her existed worldwide in 2004. Fans from different countries created websites to share information, photographs and updates about the actress. Among those websites, she reportedly gave official recognition to only one.

Her association with advertising also began at a young age. She appeared in a pencil advertisement while she was still in ninth grade. Later, a Pepsi commercial featuring her alongside actress Mahima Chaudhry brought her further attention.

Awards, honours and an estimated fortune

Over more than three decades in the entertainment industry, Aishwarya has received numerous awards and honours.

She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performances in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. She has also received recognition at the International Indian Film Academy Awards and Screen Awards, among other platforms.

In 2009, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, one of the country's prestigious civilian awards. In 2012, the French government awarded her the Order of Arts and Letters.

Apart from acting, Aishwarya has worked with several international brands and appeared in major advertising campaigns. Her brand associations, professional engagements and investments have contributed to her wealth.

According to estimates published by various celebrity wealth websites and media outlets, her net worth is around $100 million.

However, these figures are estimates and have not been independently verified through official financial disclosures.

Marriage to Abhishek Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya

Aishwarya's personal life has also remained a subject of public interest. Her relationships with actors Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi once attracted considerable media attention.

She eventually married actor Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007. The couple welcomed their daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan, on November 16, 2011.

Despite being one of India's most recognisable celebrities, Aishwarya has often kept her family life relatively private, although she is occasionally seen attending public events with her husband and daughter.

Her most recent major film appearance was in Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023), in which she reprised her role as Nandini. Since then, no new major film release featuring her has been announced.

From winning the Miss World crown to becoming a familiar face at Cannes, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's journey has spanned more than three decades. Trends in cinema and audience preferences have changed over the years, but her place in the entertainment industry remains distinctive.

For many, she will always be remembered as the woman who brought the Miss World crown home to India. For others, she is Paro from Devdas, Binodini from Chokher Bali or Nandini from Ponniyin Selvan.

Whatever the association, Aishwarya's legacy goes well beyond her beauty pageant success.
