Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS), a non-governmental development organization, distributed heifer calves among 10 underprivileged men and women in the border area of Daulatpur Upazila, Kushtia, to support employment generation and livelihood improvement. The distribution took place following a two-day training programme on heifer calf rearing held on 13–14 October 2026 at Mohishkundi Secondary School, Daulatpur, with support from the Bangladesh NGO Foundation (BNF).

The programme was inaugurated by Ashraful Alam Sarker Mukul, Chairman of Pragpur Union Parishad. Dr Afroja Pravin, Executive Director of Nari Unnayan Shakti, chaired the event.

The training provided participants with practical knowledge of livestock care, feeding management, disease prevention, vaccination and animal health protection. Dr Rokonuzzaman, a veterinary doctor from Daulatpur Upazila, served as the trainer.

Dr Sultan Muhammad Razzak, former adviser to a World Bank project; Abdul Momin, Project Coordinator of Nari Unnayan Shakti; and Selina Khatun, Field Officer of the organization, also addressed the programme. The speakers noted that providing productive assets alongside appropriate training can help disadvantaged families improve their livelihoods and create opportunities for sustainable income. Livestock rearing, they added, can be a potential source of regular income for rural households.

Shamim Reza, Head Teacher of Mohishkundi Secondary School, attended the closing session as the Chief Guest. He encouraged the beneficiaries to take proper care of the calves and apply the knowledge gained through the training to improve their families’ economic well-being.

In her presidential address, Dr Afroja Pravin emphasized that skills development and access to productive assets are essential for the sustainable development of underprivileged communities. She expressed hope that proper rearing and management of the calves would help the beneficiaries improve their financial circumstances in the future.

The initiative is expected to expand livelihood opportunities and promote self-employment among disadvantaged families in the border areas of Daulatpur.
