Ishaq Sarkar’s younger brother joines Jamaat-e-Islami

Ishaq Sarkar’s younger brother Yakub Sarkar has joined Jamaat-e-Islami after leaving the BNP.

Yakub Sarkar, a leader of the BNP’s Bangshal thana unit who was expelled from all positions of the party. He joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami along with around sixty leaders and activists.

Yakub Sarkar is the brother of Ishaq Sarkar, who was the organising secretary of the central executive committee of Jubo Dal and is now the convener of the NCP’s Dhaka South city unit.

The formal joining ceremony of Yakub Sarker took place at an outreach rally hosted by Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka South city unit. The event happened at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in Kakrail, Dhaka on Tuesday (1 September) afternoon.

Yakub Sarkar had been removed from his leadership roles in the BNP in February. His expulsion came after he allegedly went against party decisions and broke rules. The decision was approved by Rafiqul Alam Majnu, the Dhaka South BNP Convener and Tanvir Ahmed Robin, the Member Secretary.

A notification issued by Saidur Rahman Mintu, convener for organisational affairs in Dhaka South BNP confirmed that Yakub Sarkar, who served as joint convener of the Bangshal thana unit was removed from every party role and even lost his primary membership. The reasons cited were allegations of defiance and violation of discipline.

The notification also said the decision became effective immediately. It asked all party members at every level to stay informed and uphold discipline.

Earlier on April 24 Ishaq Sarkar officially joined the National Citizens Party (NCP). On the day other prominent figures like social activist Mohiuddin Rony, content creator Nuruzzaman Kafi and Fersamin Haque Iqbal Flora. Granddaughter of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq. Also joined the NCP.

Ishaq Sarkar had long been active in BNP politics. He held positions such as central organising secretary in both Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal. During the Awami League government he was involved in protests and movements led by the BNP. Because of this he faced than three hundred legal cases.

Eventually courts acquitted him in several of those cases. Recently he sought the BNP nomination, for the Dhaka-7 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election. When the party did not give him the nomination he ran as an independent candidate. After that the BNP expelled him for what they called a breach of party discipline.
