Despite securing a dramatic victory over Japan to reach the Round of 16, Brazil have been dealt a major injury blow. Star midfielder Lucas Paquetá will miss the Round of 16 clash against Norway national football team after suffering a hamstring injury in his left thigh.

Paquetá underwent imaging tests on Tuesday, a day after Brazil's Round of 32 victory over Japan. The scans confirmed a muscle injury. The Brazilian Football Confederation has not provided a specific timeline for his return, but Brazilian outlet GE reported that the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo midfielder will be unavailable for Sunday's match.

In a statement, the CBF said Paquetá is now under the close supervision of the Brazil national team's medical department and is undergoing intensive treatment aimed at helping him return to action as quickly as possible.

Paquetá appeared uncomfortable late in the first half against Japan and was seen limping on the pitch. At halftime, he was unable to walk normally back to the dressing room and left the field with the assistance of Neymar while receiving support from his teammates.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti brought on Endrick in place of Paquetá for the second half. As the match progressed, he shifted Matheus Cunha into a more central attacking role. Later, Gabriel Martinelli also made an impact in that position, scoring the winning goal in the 95th minute.

Paquetá's injury is a significant setback for Brazil. He had started every match in the tournament so far, playing a vital role in midfield with his ball retention, passing, and ability to maintain the team's balance between attack and defense—key elements of Ancelotti's tactical approach.

After his injury was confirmed, Paquetá posted a message on social media, writing: "We'll stay together until the end. Let's go, Brazil." His teammates also expressed their support, with Vinícius Júnior among those standing by him.

Meanwhile, Brazil are also closely monitoring the fitness of Raphinha. The FC Barcelona forward resumed training on Tuesday after spending 10 days on the sidelines with a right thigh injury. However, Brazil's coaching staff remain cautious about whether he will be fit in time for the Round of 16.
