Egypt coach Hossam rewarded after historic World Cup run

Egypt first appeared at the FIFA World Cup in 1934, becoming the first Arab and African nation to compete in the tournament. However, despite participating in three previous editions, the North African side had never registered a victory on football's biggest stage. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Egypt finally made history by claiming their first-ever World Cup win.
After opening their Group G campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1 in their second match to secure their maiden World Cup victory, ending a wait of nearly a century. They went on to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time by finishing among the top teams in the group.
Egypt produced another impressive display against Argentina in the knockout stage. Although they led 2-0 in a controversial match, they eventually suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat and were eliminated.
A major architect behind Egypt's remarkable campaign was head coach Hossam Hassan. Since taking charge in 2024, he has transformed the national team, and his efforts have now been rewarded with a contract extension from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA).
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed the decision in a statement on Wednesday.
EFA President Hany Abo Rida said, "The Association's Board of Directors has gladly approved the decision to extend the contracts of head coach Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan."
According to local media, the new agreement will keep the former Egypt international striker in charge of the Pharaohs until 2030. Interestingly, Hassan guided Egypt throughout the 2026 World Cup without a formal contract, as his previous deal had expired in February and was not renewed before the tournament.
Since taking over in February 2024, the 59-year-old has overseen a dramatic turnaround in Egypt's performances. Under his leadership, the team reached the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
He carried that momentum into the World Cup. Egypt opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Belgium before earning a historic 3-1 victory over New Zealand—the country's first-ever World Cup win. They then drew 1-1 with Iran in their final group match to finish as Group G runners-up and qualify for the knockout stage.
In the Round of 32, Egypt defeated Australia in a penalty shootout to book a place in the last 16.
Against defending champions Argentina, Hossam Hassan's tactical approach earned widespread praise. Egypt led 2-0 until the 78th minute and looked set for one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. However, inspired by Lionel Messi, Argentina staged a stunning comeback to win 3-2, ending Egypt's dream run.
As a player, Hossam Hassan earned 177 international caps and scored 69 goals, a record that still makes him Egypt's all-time leading scorer. In recognition of both his legendary playing career and his success as head coach, the Egyptian Football Association has entrusted him with leading the national team for the next five years.
