Brazil top Group C with dominant win over Scotland on Neymar’s return

Brazil made no mistakes against Scotland. In the final Group C match, Carlo Ancelotti’s side secured a convincing 3–0 victory, guaranteeing a place in the Round of 32 and finishing as group winners. The hero of the night in Miami was Vinícius Júnior, who scored twice in the first half. Matheus Cunha added a third after the break, while Neymar made his long-awaited return to the Brazil national team late in the match.
The equation for Brazil was simple before kickoff: avoid defeat to qualify for the Round of 32, and a victory would significantly strengthen their chances of finishing top of the group.
Vinícius quickly made things easier. In the 7th minute, Brazil capitalized on a defensive mistake by Scotland. Ryan intercepted possession from Scott McKenna and fed Vinícius, who was left one-on-one with goalkeeper Angus Gunn. The Real Madrid star calmly rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net.
After conceding early, Scotland attempted to respond but struggled to break Brazil’s control of the game. Instead, Brazil repeatedly stretched the Scottish defense through both flanks. Ryan impressed with his pace and pressure on the right, while Vinícius was the most dangerous player on the field throughout the match.
Vinícius found the net again later in the first half, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review, with the referee ruling that a foul had been committed on Jack Hendry during the buildup. Scotland escaped on that occasion, but only briefly.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Scotland lost possession once more. Brazil launched a quick attack, and Vinícius, positioned at the far post, headed home his second goal of the evening. Brazil went into halftime leading 2–0, leaving Scotland with a mountain to climb.
Scotland tried to be more aggressive after the break. Kieran Tierney delivered a cross that Scott McTominay headed straight at Alisson. The Brazilian goalkeeper also dealt comfortably with a Lewis Ferguson free-kick and another McTominay header. However, Scotland never seriously threatened Brazil’s dominance.
The match was effectively settled in the 60th minute. A swift Brazilian counterattack exposed the Scottish defense, and Matheus Cunha finished calmly to make it 3–0. From that point onward, Ancelotti’s men maintained complete control.
The most emotional moment of the night arrived late in the second half. Neymar entered the match as a substitute for Cunha, marking his first appearance for Brazil since October 2023.
The crowd erupted in celebration as the Brazilian star returned after a lengthy injury absence. His comeback is significant not only tactically but also psychologically for the Seleção.
Vinícius pushed for a hat-trick in the closing stages, but Angus Gunn produced an excellent save to deny him. Gabriel Magalhães also came close from a Neymar corner, though Scotland’s defense cleared the danger. Brazil did not add another goal, but they never relinquished control of the match.
With the victory, Brazil finished the group stage with seven points from three matches. Morocco also reached seven points after defeating Haiti 4–2, but Brazil secured first place on goal difference. Morocco advanced as runners-up. Scotland finished third with three points and must now wait to see whether they qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Haiti exited the tournament without earning a point.
One of the biggest positives for Brazil is the form of Vinícius Júnior. He has scored in all three group-stage matches—against Morocco, Haiti, and now Scotland—establishing himself as the focal point of Brazil’s attack.
With Raphinha sidelined through injury, Neymar only recently returning, and questions surrounding the balance of the forward line, Vinícius’ consistency has become a major strength for Ancelotti’s team.
For Scotland, it was a disappointing night. They had hoped to make history against Brazil, but defensive mistakes proved costly and effectively ended their chances of taking anything from the match. Their dream of reaching the World Cup Round of 32 for the first time is now no longer entirely in their own hands.
Brazil’s World Cup campaign is now truly gathering momentum. After opening the tournament with a draw against Morocco, questions were raised about the team’s prospects. However, victories over Haiti and Scotland have eased many of those concerns.
Ancelotti’s side now advance to the Round of 32 as Group C winners, with much tougher challenges awaiting them ahead.
