Ahead of the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday met with Dr Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, President-elect of UNGA 81, in New York.

United Nations in Bangladesh extended its warmest congratulations and best wishes to Dr Khalilur Rahman as he assumes this important global leadership role.

The election took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York on June 2, in line with Rule 30 of the Rules of Procedure.

Khalilur Rahman was elected to serve as President of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

In accordance with the established regional rotation, the President of the 81st session of the General Assembly was elected from the Asia-Pacific Group.

At the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, world leaders from 193 member states will convene to revitalize global cooperation, give a critical push to the Sustainable Development Goals and drive collective action for peace, dignity and equality on a healthy planet under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All".
