Gaza hospitals face generator shutdowns as WHO halts fuel supplies
WHO said diesel deliveries will stop to over 20 hospitals, clinics in Gaza due to fund crisis
The World Health Organization will halt diesel supplies to over 20 hospitals and health centers in Gaza starting September 19 due to lack of funding.
The decision threatens to paralyze hospitals and health centers, including Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, Al-Sahaba Hospital, and others that rely on WHO fuel grants.
Palestinian officials have urged the WHO to reverse the decision to prevent the collapse of Gaza's health sector.
An Israeli airstrike killed two Hamas members and wounded 13 others in Gaza's Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, despite a ceasefire reached in October 2025.
Since October 7, 2023, the death toll from the Israeli offensive in Gaza has reached 73,783, with 174,738 wounded.
Palestinian medical sources revealed on Tuesday that the World Health Organization has notified more than 20 hospitals and health centers in the Gaza Strip that diesel supplies will be halted starting September 19.
Mohammed Abu Afesh, head of the Medical Relief Society in Gaza, said the WHO has officially informed over 13 hospitals and 7 health centers in the territory that it will stop providing the diesel fuel needed to operate their departments and generators.
Abu Afesh told the Palestinian Safa news agency that the WHO said the decision, citing a "lack of funding," would take effect on September 19. He warned that the move threatens to completely paralyze the affected hospitals and health centers, including Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, Al-Sahaba Hospital, Friends of the Patient Hospital, Public Service Hospital, and several Medical Relief Society centers.
The head of the Medical Relief Society in Gaza noted that these hospitals and centers provide free medical and treatment services to residents, relying on fuel grants from the WHO.
According to the Palestinian agency, Abu Afesh called on the WHO to fulfill its moral and humanitarian responsibilities, urging the organization to immediately reverse the decision and not to halt diesel supplies under any pretext, in order to prevent the total collapse of the remaining health sector.
Separately, the Israeli military announced on Tuesday that two Hamas members were killed in an airstrike targeting them in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian medics confirmed the deaths and said 13 others were wounded in the strike, which hit a car in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in western Gaza City, according to Reuters.
The airstrike comes amid ongoing tensions despite the ceasefire reached in October 2025 with US support, which ended major combat operations in Gaza but has not stopped Israeli air raids. Little progress has been made toward a permanent end to the war.
