Iran again announces closure of strait of Hormuz

Although the signing of a temporary peace agreement between the United States and Iran had raised hopes for an improvement in relations, ties between Tehran and Washington have once again taken a turn for the worse. Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world's most important international shipping routes—to all maritime traffic.

On Saturday (June 20), Iran's central military command, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, made the announcement, accusing the United States and Israel of violating the agreement.

In a statement, the Joint Operational Command of Iran's Armed Forces said that Washington had breached the first clause of the post-war memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington. It also described Israel's ongoing activities in southern Lebanon as violations of the ceasefire.

The statement further declared that, in response to these developments, all maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would be suspended.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical energy transportation corridors. A significant portion of global oil and gas exports passes through this route. As a result, any closure of the strait could have major repercussions for international energy markets and global trade.

However, there has been no immediate response from either the United States or Israel regarding Iran's announcement.
